Chiropractors share the vision that the body heals itself from the inside out. The nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. The central nervous system, consisting of the brain and spinal cord are covered by bone. The brain is surrounded by the skull, and the spinal cord is covered by the spinal column (vertebrae). If any of the 24 movable vertebra loses its normal motion or position, it can start to irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the function of the tissues, organs, or systems and is called a subluxation.
Subluxations can result from a number of activities. Automobile collisions, falls, and improper lifting are some types of physical stresses. Emotional stresses and chemical stresses, such as eating refined sugars, fatty foods, taking pain pills and muscle relaxers also affect the body and lead to subluxations. The more subluxations a person has, the more problems that person has or will have in the future.
The chiropractor’s job is to locate and remove these subluxations, so the body can naturally heal itself. There are many techniques that the chiropractor can use to remove the subluxations. Most people are familiar with a manual adjustment, where the chiropractor uses his or her own hands to move the vertebrae into their specific ranges of motion. There are, however, other less aggressive ways to adjust the body. One is with the help of a small hand held device called the activator. Another technique uses a computer and vibration to help with the adjustment. This machine is called a ProAdjuster. During this kind of adjustment, the patient would remain seated and, because it uses vibration, it is safe for virtually any patient.
Of course, before any adjustment can be made, the chiropractor will sit down with the patient, take a personal history and do a thorough physical examination. Many times x-rays will be taken on the first appointment. It is very important to make certain that the spine can tolerate an adjustment, and x-rays show the chiropractor any pathology or breaks that would make adjusting it a bad idea.
After going over the exam and x-rays on the patient’s next visit, the chiropractor and patient discuss the treatment plan. This way, the patient will understand that getting better will take work not only on the chiropractor’s part, but on his or her part as well. Once the patient understands his or her part in the care process, the first treatment can begin.
Remember, without physical interferences, the body can heal itself ...LET IT!!!! |
